Short retreats
Weekend meditation retreat: is a short retreat enough?
Last updated: November 2026Published by Andrew Keaveney
A weekend meditation retreat is enough for a first taste of retreat life, but four days gives most beginners time to settle past the first couple of days.
Andrew Keaveney offers both lengths at the Art of Living Retreat Center in Boone, North Carolina: a three-day Happiness Retreat on November 11 to 13, 2026, and a four-day Breathwork & Meditation Retreat on November 5 to 8, 2026. Both are residential.

Is a weekend meditation retreat worth it for a beginner?
Yes, if a weekend is what your schedule allows. A short residential retreat removes work, screens and chores for a few days, which is often the hardest part of starting a practice at home.
The tradeoff is time to settle. Path of Sincerity writes that the first 2 or 3 days are often just getting acclimated, and suggests at least 4 days and 5 nights for a first retreat (source). On a three-day program, you may finish just as things deepen. If you can add a day, the four-day option gives more room.
Three days or four: Andrew Keaveney’s two programs
| Program | Dates | Length | Choose it if |
|---|---|---|---|
| Breathwork & Meditation Retreat | November 5 to 8, 2026 | 4 days, residential | You can take four days and want a breath-led way into meditation |
| Happiness Retreat | November 11 to 13, 2026 | 3 days, residential | A long weekend is the most you can take right now |
How to make a short retreat count
- Practice a little beforehand. Ten minutes a day for two weeks makes the first sessions feel familiar. Andrew’s films include a 10 minute guided mindfulness meditation by the lake.
- Arrive rested. Travel the day before if you can, so day one is not lost to fatigue.
- Go offline. Tell work and family you will be unavailable, and put your phone away.
- Plan a soft landing. Leave an easy evening after you get home so the calm does not end at the door.
Where a weekend retreat leads
Many people use a weekend retreat to test whether retreat life suits them. Path of Sincerity suggests that after a handful of 6 to 14 night retreats, some practitioners go on to 1 to 3 month retreats, but that is a path built over years, not a requirement.

Common questions
Are weekend meditation retreats cheaper?
Shorter retreats usually cost less in total because they include fewer nights of lodging and meals, though the nightly rate can be similar. Andrew’s Happiness Retreat runs three days, November 11 to 13, and his Breathwork & Meditation Retreat runs four days, November 5 to 8. Prices for both are listed by the Retreat Center, not on his site.

Most first-timers do better starting shorter. Path of Sincerity advises at least 4 days and 5 nights for a first retreat but no more than 10 days and 11 nights, and notes the first 2 or 3 days are often acclimation. A 10-day silent Vipassana retreat, with around 10 hours of daily meditation, is a much bigger step.
